Ethel Waters

Stormy Weather pasa por ser uno de mis "estándar del jazz" predilectos. Como tema conocido que es, ha sido versionado multitud de veces, aunque hubo que haber una primera vez. El tema original data de 1933, escrito por Harold Arlen y Ted Koehler, cantado por primera ver Ethel Waters en el Cotton Club de Nueva York. Ese mismo año Ethel Waters grabó la canción para Brunswick Records. Es la primera, es la original, pero entre mis preferencias es la tercera.

Mi segunda versión preferida es la de Lena Horne, que da incluso título a la película Stormy Weather (1943) de Andrew L. Stone. Una voz más melodiosa, una versión expléndida.

Mi versión preferida muestra además mi debilidad por Billie Holiday. Pero de las varias que tiene grabadas a lo largo de sus años de carrera me quedo con las primeras versiones.
